Key answer

Prepare your driving licence or officially recognised evidence and the vehicle registration certificate. Since April 2024, insurance for the registered vehicles concerned is checked in the FVA insurance database; this does not remove the obligation to be insured.

Check documents before departure

Check readability, validity and whether they match the vehicle used. A document for another car or a simple photograph is not universal evidence. If using a temporary document, read its validity period and territorial limits. Rental vehicles, trailers and certain situations require specific checks.

Insurance: keep the useful details

For the registered vehicles covered by the change since April 2024, insurance papers no longer have to be presented: police consult the insured-vehicle database. Nevertheless, keep the document and contact details supplied by the insurer for an accident or assistance. Check foreign requirements separately; insurance has not become optional.

CEPC and secure evidence of driving rights

After passing the French test, a favourable CEPC result with proof of identity serves as evidence for four months in France. A secure driving-rights attestation can be useful in the situations specified by the online service. A submitted application does not by itself establish a right to drive. Examine the actual document obtained rather than the procedure’s name alone.

During and after a check

Look for documents while stopped, without abrupt gestures, and follow instructions. If a document is missing, read the requests and deadlines notified to you. Do not subsequently send evidence to an unidentified contact. Retain notice references and any proof of presentation supplied, without unnecessarily disclosing complete documents.

Prepare useful documents without multiplying copies

Before travelling, identify where the documents required for your situation and assistance details are kept. A photograph on a phone is not automatically equivalent to the document requested. For a rental or travel abroad, compare your preparation with the relevant provider’s instructions. Do not send complete copies of identity documents to a site that merely provides general information.

ADCS and registration copies for a rental

Service Public states that the secure driving-rights attestation, ADCS, is valid for four months from issue, can be reissued and is usable only in France, on paper or digitally. The vehicle registration certificate is still required even when you are not its holder; a copy is accepted for a short-term rental. Check foreign travel requirements separately.

Example situation

You drive a car that is not registered in your name.

Prepare the licence, vehicle documents and useful insurance information. Check borrowing or rental conditions and retain a way to contact the registered holder if needed.

What to avoid. The registered holder and driver can differ; use must remain authorised and insured.

Practical checks

  • Check documents for the exact vehicle
  • Read temporary-document conditions
  • Keep insurance details
  • Identify any requests after a check

Common questions

Does removal of the green insurance card remove the insurance obligation?

No. Mandatory insurance remains; checks use the FVA for vehicles concerned.

Does a pending licence application always allow driving?

No. You need a valid right to drive and accepted evidence for your situation. An application acknowledgement is not general authorisation.
