In rain, increase the gap to the vehicle ahead and reduce speed. Legal limits change on certain roads; the actual situation may require driving more slowly still.
Prepare visibility
Check the wiper blades, washer fluid, ventilation and lights before a long journey. Clear mist before setting off. Spray from a heavy vehicle can hide the road almost instantly. Choose a gap that leaves time to observe and avoid remaining unnecessarily beside it. Excessively bright light reflected by rain can disturb other road users.
Preserve grip
Brake and steer progressively. Markings, leaves and dirty areas can be particularly slippery. Avoid abrupt movements as you approach standing water. If grip seems to decrease, keep inputs gentle and try to reduce speed progressively. Tyre condition and pressure contribute to handling; electronic assistance does not remove physical limits.
Know when to avoid a road section
Do not enter a flooded road if you do not know its depth or condition. Follow closures and official instructions. A road can be closed even when navigation still suggests it. Stop away from traffic if the wipers and ventilation cannot maintain adequate visibility. Check weather warnings before leaving, then only while stopped.
Lighting: distinguish front and rear
In heavy rain, front fog lights can supplement or replace dipped headlights under the French Code. Rear fog lights are reserved for fog or snow: do not use them for rain alone. Check your car’s controls before travelling in bad weather.
Water on the carriageway
Spray from heavy vehicles and water in wheel ruts reduce the information available. Avoid a rushed lane change to escape spray. Increase the gap, reduce speed progressively and keep movements smooth. Do not enter a flooded section if you know neither its depth nor its condition.
Distinguish the speed limit from the following margin
In precipitation, general limits change with the road type. A lower local limit still applies. Separately, the following interval must allow you to anticipate slowing traffic: converting seconds to metres provides a reference without modelling grip, braking or visibility. Reducing speed and rebuilding space ahead are complementary decisions.
Reference: Vitesse au volant ↗
You enter a motorway during a heavy shower.
Adjust speed before standing water, increase following margins and check the lighting. If the wipers no longer provide adequate visibility, seek a safe stop away from the traffic lanes.
What to avoid. The legal rain speed limit is not a speed guaranteed to be safe.
Practical checks
- Check wipers, lights and ventilation
- Increase the following gap
- Avoid abrupt movements
- Respect closed or flooded roads
Common questions
Can I cross a road covered by water?
Do not enter without knowing the conditions. Current, depth and road condition can be deceptive; use another authorised route.
Are automatic lights always sufficient in rain?
No. Activation depends on the system. Check that suitable lighting works, including at the rear, and use manual controls if necessary.
