No barrier does not mean a free journey. For the A13 and A14 sections managed by Sanef, payment must be made within 72 hours after passing if a valid automatic payment arrangement has not paid for the journey.
Identify the journey’s operator
Gantries identify passages and signs explain payment. Note the road and operator before leaving the motorway. A tag or account must be operational and correctly linked to the vehicle. For a rental, ask how tolls are handled and what additional fees may apply. Do not assume that the owner will pay on your behalf.
Pay through the official channel
Go to the operator’s site yourself or use a payment method it documents. Check the registration plate and journeys before confirming. Methods and deadlines depend on the network; the 72-hour window here refers to Sanef’s information for A13/A14. Keep evidence and check payment status after an error. A reminder on your phone can help prevent an oversight.
Respond to a notice or message
An urgent text containing a payment link can be fraudulent. Do not enter bank details until you have identified the service. If you receive a payment notice, read its nature and deadlines for settling or disputing it. Unpaid-toll penalties have a specific framework; distinguish initial journey payment from later handling of a notice.
A13/A14 and A79 have different operators
A13/A14 use Sanef’s arrangements; for A79, consult ALIAE. An account or plate registered on one network does not establish that every passage on another network will be paid. Check each road on your itinerary and whether your tag actually works before departure.
Rental or borrowed cars
Ask who pays for passages and what evidence you will receive. Note the dates of use and exact registration plate. If paying directly, check with the rental company that a device has not already paid. Its administration fees are separate from the toll and depend on the contract.
Payment declined: retain evidence and check the passage
If the bank shows a decline or the page closes, do not treat the passage as paid. Open the official channel yourself and check status before making another payment. Note the time, plate and displayed reference without sending bank details in a message. Sanef’s published arrangements include the tag, automatic account payment, payment on sanef.com and approved Nirio points.

You used several motorways in a rental car.
Identify the operator for each passage and the rental company’s arrangements. Check that the correct plate and journeys are included, then retain payment evidence.
What to avoid. A missing or unrecognised tag and the rental company’s administration fees can require separate checks.
Practical checks
- Identify the operator and vehicle
- Check the tag or automatic payment
- Pay within the applicable deadline
- Keep payment evidence
Common questions
Is a journey without barriers free?
No. Payment simply takes place differently. Check the network’s signs and the operator’s official channel.
Does a saved payment arrangement automatically cover a new car?
Do not assume so. Check the plate, period and payment method associated with the account, then the operator’s journey status.
